Relief from chemotherapy-related nausea? It’s all in the wrist.
Is it really possible that something as simple as a wristband can provide significant relief from the nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy? For the millions of people undergoing chemo the welcome answer is a resounding "yes".
Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting, known as CINV, is usually caused by one of two factors: irritation to cells in the digestive tract and/or the over-release of certain neurotransmitters by the stomach. Up to 90% of patients on Platinol, BiCNU, Cytoxan, DTIC-DOME, Zanosar, and Mustargen will experience the queasiness and vomiting associated with CINV. Clinical studies have proven, however, that wearing a simple wristband known as a BioBand, essentially a chemotherapy nausea bracelet, can bring quick and effective relief.
BioBands utilize the principles of acupressure to quickly short circuit the brain’s nausea response to chemotherapy agents that the body regards as toxic. Developed by a Board Certified Ob-Gyn to alleviate the symptoms of morning-sickness, this simple device places a small "bump" over the P-6 acupressure point on the wrist providing gentle but continual pressure that disrupts the brain's nausea signals.
Here's what you do:
- Place the adjustable BioBand on either wrist
- Make sure the "bump" on the wristband is centered on the underside of your wrist directly on the P-6 acupressure point. (Locating this point is easy: it’s three fingers in width from the first crease in your wrist)
- With your free hand, tighten the strap until the band is snug but still comfortable.
- Secure the BioBand by pressing down on the adhesive square.
That’s all there is to it. Relief from the symptoms of chemo-associated nausea should be felt within 15 minutes. In some cases you may have to reposition the BioBand for maximum nausea relief, but the prospect of an effective chemotherapy nausea bracelet, which uses no drugs and has no side effects, should be welcome news for anyone receiving chemotherapy.
