Does the prospect of chemotherapy make you nauseous?
Along with fatigue and the possibility of hair loss, nausea from chemotherapy is generally considered one of the more distressing side effects of this potent chemical attack on the cancer cells in your body. Fortunately, there’s now a very simple and highly effective way to relieve the queasiness and nausea—and it’s as easy as wearing something on your wrist.
BioBands, adjustable wristbands that put gentle pressure on a special point on the underside of your wrist, have been shown to be remarkably effective in disrupting the “nausea signals” that the brain puts out in response to the chemicals in chemotherapy interpreted by the body as toxic substances.
Scientists now believe that people undergoing chemotherapy experience Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting, known as CINV, due to two factors: irritation to the cells in the digestive tract and/or the over-release of neurotransmitters in the stomach. The most common chemo drugs known to produce these side effects are:
- Cisplatin (Platinol)
- Carmustine (BiCNU)
- Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan)
- Dacarbazine (DTIC-Dome)
- Streptozocin (Zanosar)
- Mechlorethamine (Mustargen)
The BioBand, developed by a Board Certified Ob-Gyn to help alleviate the symptoms of morning sickness, works by creating pressure signals that travels through large-diameter nerve fibers in the median nerve to the brain. A small bead in the BioBand is carefully positioned over the P-6 acupressure point on the underside of your wrist activating sensory receptors called “proprioceptors” that “short-circuit” the brain’s signals for nausea and vomiting. Nausea from chemotherapy usually dissipates within 10 minutes—without drugs and with no side effects.
So, the good news, on top of the fact that today’s chemotherapy drugs are highly effective weapons in the fight against cancer, is that worrying about nausea doesn’t have to be part of the regimen anymore.
